Whales Watching trip :
Sperm whales are visible year-round thanks to a resident family in Mauritius. Humpback whales, on the other hand, come to reproduce during the winter months, from June to October. To spot humpback whales, we often follow their blows from afar, while hydrophones are used to locate sperm whales. Respect is essential when approaching whales. Sometimes, sperm whales or humpback whales may approach the boat out of curiosity! To avoid disturbing them, we will stay near them for about an hour.
The sperm whale, the most common in Mauritius, is present year-round, especially females and young. They live in the open sea and dive to feed.
An adult male averages 15 meters and can reach 20 meters and 50 tons.
It can dive up to 2000 meters to hunt giant squids. Once hunted for their oil, sperm whales are now protected.
The humpback whale migrates to Mauritius from May to September to reproduce.
An adult male can measure up to 15 meters and weigh 50 tons, living up to 60 years. They produce special sounds during reproduction and live near the coasts.
Females stay with the baby, and males travel alone. They travel about 25,000 km per year!
